  2. What are the steps involved in creating a Web site?

In its simplest form, Web site development requires four major basic steps:

    • You first need to obtain a Web site address, also known as a URL (Universal Resource Locator) or domain. The most typical format is “www.yourwebsitename.com”. Other extensions are used by various types of organizations: “.org”, “.edu”, “.gov”, “.net”, “.biz” are among the most common. In itself, registering a URL is not difficult, but since many names have already been used, you may not be able to obtain your first choice.
    • Secondly, you must choose a hosting service. The hosting service is simply a computer (server) that holds your Web site's data. When someone tries to reach your site by entering your domain name (URL) in the address field of a Web browser, the data are transferred to him/her from this server.
    • The third step is to design and program your Web site so that Web browsers can interpret it. Web browsers understand various types of data-processing languages, the most common being HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), and other languages such as DHTML, XML, JavaScript, PHP and ASP. Web browsers do not interpret all data-processing languages in the same way. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and other Web browsers all understand various dialects of the same language. Consequently, the same Web page is posted differently according to the Web browser used. It is therefore important to design your Web site so that it is compatible with several Web browsers.
    • Finally, the Web site needs to be published. This is the process of transferring the site from a local computer to the Web hosting computer.

    • Visitors have trouble reaching your Web site?
    • Your site takes an abnormally long time to load?
    • Your current Web designer doesn't meet your requirements?
    • You need to spend outrageous amounts of money to make minor modifications?
    • Your site has become obsolete because of lack of maintenance?
    • You want to add or modify photo, video or audio files?

We are always available to answer your emails or phone calls. 4. How can I increase traffic, i.e. the number of people who visit my site?

First, we encourage you to make regular enquiries about your target public or customers' needs and behaviours. What other sites are they likely to visit? Contact your business partners' Web site administrators and the companies that offer services related to yours to set up a reciprocal link exchange, i.e., that they post your site's URL on their references page, and vice versa. This is a first profitable, inexpensive and easy initiative.

In addition, ensure that your pages contain relevant keywords. Search engine “robots” regularly scour the Web in search of Web pages to add to their database. The sites are then classified using a host of alphanumeric or logarithmic equations. These equations are updated regularly. The process by which your pages are enhanced, so that they are posted in the search engine lists, is called referencing or SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Referencing is the most profitable method to use to increase traffic on your site.

  5. What does referencing involve?

Your site's referencing requires four basic steps:

    • You must first find out which expressions and keywords your target public generally uses.
    • You must then optimize your site's pages, a step which consists in modifying the titles, texts, image descriptions, so that they match the expressions and keywords determined in Step 1.
    • Thirdly, you must develop incoming and reciprocal links, by creating site descriptions that are then used to manually submit your free and paid advertisement to online search directories.
    • Lastly, you need to follow-up by carrying out a thorough analysis of visitor statistics and your positioning for each keyword. We will then be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of our referencing initiative and make adjustments accordingly. Kryzalid recommends that you carry out a monthly analysis and re-examine your referencing strategy every three months, particularly if your rank in the search results lists is falling or if the number of visits starts to decrease.

  6. Once my site is online, what is the maintenance investment I need to make?

Besides renewing the usage license for your domain name, your site will require little maintenance, as long as you have a Web hosting service.

You will probably want to make minor modifications, like adding or removing pages, or improving your referencing strategy.

Additionally, you will probably want to know your site's statistics: How many visitors in a given period? How much time do they spend on your site? From which sources do they come? Keep in mind that new sites are regularly created and that has a major impact on search engine dynamics. To start with, your site is likely to be at the top of a specific category or search using a keyword. Over time, it may become necessary, for example, to change keywords to obtain better results.

  7. What is FTP and which FTP client should I choose?

The acronym FTP means File Transfer Protocol. This protocol allows your computer to communicate with the server on which your Web site is hosted.

An FTP client is software that lets you access your Web site's files and modify them as you would modify the files on your computer. Many FTP clients can be found on the Internet and choosing one is sometimes difficult. Here are 3 free FTP clients that we recommend:

    • FileZilla logo FileZilla : Available for Windows, Mac OS X or GNU/Linux, this FTP client is a benchmark in the field.
    • FireFTP logo FireFTP : If you use Firefox to surf the Internet, this FTP client is for you; it is directly installed in your browser.
    • Cyberduck logo Cyberduck : If you use Mac OS X, Cyberduck is a very good Open Source FTP client, having already proven to be reliable and benefiting from the support of its developer community.

To connect to your site's FTP you need 3 pieces of connection information that are sent to you by your hoster when your hosting is implemented:

    1. Host: The address of the server on which your site is located. Generally: ftp.yoursite.ca
    2. User ID
    3. Password

Once this information is gathered, refer to the instructions provided by the FTP client to create a connection to your site.

  8. How do I properly choose my Web site's domain name?

Choosing the proper domain name for your Web site is critical. It is in fact the address that will appear in your email address, on your letterhead, business cards, brochure... and allow your customers to reach your site. The domain name must therefore be simple, explicit and easy to remember.

Here are some simple rules to follow when purchasing your domain name:

    • The domain name must identify you: Using your name (ex: www.joboom.ca), your activity (ex: www.jobpostings.ca) or both (ex: www.joboompostings.ca)
    • Choose a short domain name. Although domain names may contain up to 67 characters, avoid exceeding 15 characters, and ideally use less than 7. The shorter your domain name is, the easier it is to remember it and type it quickly.
    • Avoid hyphens and numbers, because even they make the address easier to read, they make it difficult to spell and complicated to type. (ex: www.super-discount2000.com will be difficult to pronounce: “super hyphen discount the number two thousand dot com”)
    • Buy the “.com” domain name, but also your region's extensions (ex: “.ca”, “.qc.ca”). Even if you only use the .ca to communicate your site's address, having the .com or .qc.ca allows preventing other sites from using them instead of you and diverting your customers.
    • The first step initially consists in checking its availability, which you can do using the following form:
      Soumettre
